Asus Cloud to Build Nvidia-Powered Supercomputer in Taiwan, Boosting AI Capacity by 50%
Asus Cloud, a subsidiary of Taiwan's electronics giant Asus, is constructing a 250-petaflop supercomputer powered by Nvidia in Tainan. The project, developed in collaboration with Taiwan AI Cloud and the National Centre for High-Performance Computing, will significantly enhance the island's AI processing capabilities. The first phase, launching in December 2025, will deliver 80 petaflops, with the final build reaching 250 petaflops—a 50% increase in Taiwan's total computing power.
This initiative marks a reversal of years of underinvestment, with Taiwan committing NT$190 billion to strengthen its AI and supercomputing infrastructure. The goal is to achieve 1,200 petaflops by 2029, positioning Taiwan among Asia's top computing powers. While the new system won't rival the world's most powerful supercomputer, El Capitan (1,700 petaflops), it underscores Taiwan's strategy to reduce reliance on foreign cloud providers and bolster domestic infrastructure.
